Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and one of Southeast Asia’s leading cities. Starting as a small trading post near the mouth of the Chao Phraya River in the 15th century, the city has developed by leaps and bound and emerging as one of the region’s most dynamic and influential city.
Known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or simply Krung Thep, which means "City of Angels", Bangkok is filled with landmarks and attractions such as the historic Grand Palace, which used to be the official royal residence; Wat Arun, an important Buddhist Temple; Wat Benchamobophit, also referred to as the Marble Temple; and many more.
Despite the city’s traditional core, a modern and affluent world of posh hotels, huge malls, and soaring skyscrapers is thriving in Bangkok. Its nightlife scene is thrilling and vibrant, with bars and clubs in Patpong, Si Lom and Sukhumvit. For those who want a gastronomic feast, Bangkok’s affordable but yummy street food is a must-try, with pad thai or papaya salad costing only a few bahts.
Almost all of Thailand’s cities and provinces can be reached by bus from Bangkok. It is also one of Asia’s busiest and most important air transport hubs.
